Rugby Sevens team loses thrice

The local rugby team lost all three of their matches  on the first day of the rugby competition at the XIX Commonwealth Games currently underway in New Delhi, India at Delhi University.

The five-time North American Central American and Caribbean (NACRA) champions failed to score a point in any of their three matches. In Guyana’s first match against Scotland the score was 26-0, their smallest margin of defeat on the day. The Scottish team at the end of the first half led 7-0 after Lee Jones scored a try and Mike Adamson converted the goal kick.

Guyana’s most humiliating defeat came against former world champions New Zealand who beat them 52-0. The New Zealanders led 26-0 in the first half and then came back in the second half to continue the rout.

In their third match Guyana were trounced 47-0 by Canada. The South Americans were out of it after Thyssen de Goede scored the first try; and the 2010 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) champions were trailing 0-19 at half time.

Guyana will now play Tonga in the quarterfinal bowl today.
