Junior chess player Suhai Feng is proving that a boy can do a man’s job when it comes to the Topco Juice sponsored National Senior Chess qualifiers currently underway.
The youngster is creating shock waves by taking out more experienced players despite solid play from Learie Webster.
After five round Webster leads the field with four and one half points from four wins and a draw.
But it is the performance of Feng, fresh from the National Closed Junior Chess championships, who is focal point of the tournament.
Feng’s biggest scalp to date was none other than veteran player and Guyana Chess Federation president Errol Tiwari who was forced to resign two moves from checkmate in the fifth round clash.
Feng is making the most out of the bold move to challenge the seniors after defeating Glenford Corlette in the first round and veteran player Michael Perreira in the second.
For good measure he also threw in draws with former national champion Kriskal Persaud and Loris Nathoo to be on four points.
But it was in the tense endgame with even pawns against Tiwari that the
youngster showed his mettle managing to promote a pawn to queen first, threatening checkmate in two moves and forcing Tiwari to resign.
Webster, too has been all business securing wins against Viddesh Shameer, Raan Motilall, David Khan and Shiv Nandalall and drawing with Taffin Khan in round two.
Nathoo, David Khan and Feng are all on four points each.
The points standing after five rounds reads; Webster four and a half; Nathoo, David Khan and Feng four points each; Taffin Khan and Ron Motilall, three and a half points apiece; Shiv Nandalall, Ryan Singh, Kriskal Persaud, Errol Tiwari and Alexander Duncan, three points each and Raan Motilall, Frankie Farley and Michael Pereira, two and a half points each.
Nine other players are tied on two points each.
The tournament continues tomorrow from 18:00 hours at the Keishar’s Sports Club.
