Digicel hands over trophies for Schools National C/ships

Telecommunications giant, Digicel, yesterday officially handed over the trophies for the Schools National Championships to be held November 9 – 12 at the Providence National Stadium.

Digicel became the first sponsor to jump on board to co-sponsor the major event, and representatives from the company yesterday handed over the trophies at the company’s boardroom, Kingston.

The trophies, which were handed over to representatives of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) are a part of the sponsorship package that Digicel will be pumping into the championships, which according to the officials, will be in excess of three million dollars.

Digicel’s Head of Sales and Distribution, Nalini Vieira, expressed the company’s delight at being a part of the event.
Vieira also said she hoped that the relationship between Digicel and the championships will be a long one.

“We are very pleased to partner with the event. The event is celebrating its 50th anniversary and we are very pleased to be a part of that.
“We hope that we can be here for another 50 years because we are here to stay. We’ve been in it three years now and we are really looking forward to being involved,” Vieira said.

President of the GTU, Colin Bynoe, stressed again the significance of the 50th anniversary and expressed gratitude to Digicel on behalf of all of the stakeholders of the event.

Bynoe said being the 50th year they thought it was high time to relieve some of the financial burden from the MoE in hosting the championships.
In that regard, the assistance of corporate Guyana was sought and Bynoe noted the eagerness with which Digicel had responded.
He also expressed his hope that the relationship between Digicel and the championships can become long-term.
