COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, CMC – West Indies were set to undergo a second full training session today, as they continued to build up to the start of their three-Test series against Sri Lanka starting next week.
The Caribbean side arrived here Sunday and despite travelling for almost two days, underwent a training session at the Sinhalese Sports Club yesterday morning.
They were expected to follow this up with another session at the same venue today in what have been hot conditions in the country’s largest city.
Captain Darren Sammy said, the squad had already settled in well and was committed to playing strong all-rounder cricket on the tour.
“We will be looking to play total team cricket … everyone is expected to make a positive contribution. Spin bowling is always a major factor in Sri Lanka, as the pitches as usually flat and slow,” the newly appointed skipper said.
“With this in mind we have our plans for the series and we will look to execute. We have to bad for long periods, and this is something we have been working on … we have to make sure we put our runs on the board.
We want to give our bowlers something to bowl at and ensure that we stay in the game at all times.”
West Indies will open their tour with a three-day match against a President’s XI tomorrow, before facing Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle starting next Monday.
The Windies have lost seven of their last nine Tests to Sri Lanka and have not beaten the Asian side in a series in 13 years.
