Government supporting T&T CT20 bid

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad,  CMC – Government here has thrown its full backing behind the national cricket board’s bid to host the next two Caribbean Twenty20 Championships.

Sports Minister Anil Roberts confirmed Tuesday that government had given the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board the assurance it would support their bid for next January’s showpiece as well as the 2012 event.

T&T, along with Antigua and Barbados have submitted bids to the West Indies Cricket Board to host the events, with the bid review committee expected to announce their decision next Monday.

“We have given the cricket board our word that we are fully behind them and have agreed to all government guarantees that is necessary for a tournament like this,” Roberts said.

“We have decided to waive taxes where necessary and to assist in visas and these things, in order to make it happen.

“The cricket board did not require any financial assistance from us and in these stringent financial times, we really appreciate this.”

The inaugural CT20 tournament, held in July this year, was staged as a joint venture between Barbados and T&T.
