District 10 run out winners

The official results were yet to come in up to press time last night but unofficially District 10 are the winners of the National Schools, Track and Field Championships which climaxed late last night at the National Stadium at Providence.

District 10 had amassed a   sizeable lead at the end of 87 events of the competition.
District 10 were out front with 466.5  points with District Six occupying the second position with 333 points.
District 11, 303 points was third and District Five fourth with 238 points.

In the teachers division, District 11 was in front with 133 points after the completion of 37 final events.
The star performer in that category was undoubtedly national sprint champion Alisha Fortune
Guyana’s leading sprint lady Fortune, representing District 12, set two new records in the female teachers 31 – 40 80m and 200m events before helping her team to win the teachers Open 4x100m event.

Sponsored by Giftland OfficeMax FILA brand, Fortune said she was satisfied with what she has done on her first year at the event as a teacher.
The Mae’s Academy schoolteacher said she had come out to set records and was glad that she accomplished her goal.
District 6 occupies the second position on 115 points with District 13 a close third with 114 points.

Meanwhile, District 10 continued to rake in points last night as the track and field events continued even though their boys Open 4x100m relay team was disqualified.

According to the official results, the team placed first with a time of 45.1s but was subsequently disqualified after one of their athletes was found guilty of “obstruction at the finishing line.”

District 11’s relay team eventually was awarded first place with their 45.2s finish, with District 13, second and District 6, third.
However, it was a smooth win for District 10 in the girls’ Open 4x100m, which they dominated in a time of 51 seconds.
District 11 was second after a strong finish from anchor Ashley Tasher saw the team clocking a 52 seconds finish.
Jevina Straker District 12, opted out of the girls 3000m, but won the girls’ Under-18 400m in 1:01.5s.
Straker came from behind to edge crowd favorite Letitia Myles of District 13.

Myles, thinking she had the race in the bag relaxed as she came down the stretch realizing a little too late that Straker was edging up behind her to steal the win.
Speaking to Stabroek Sports following her 1:01.8s second place finish, Myles admitted that she had “lapsed” by relaxing as she came down to the final 80m and was stunned when she saw Straker edging past her.

Basking in the win, Straker said that she was determined to come out with another win after placing first in the 800m and second in the 10km road race and the 1500m.

Jevina Sampson gave a superb performance as she won the  girls’ Under-14 400m while, District 15’s Melissa Byass added the girls Under-16 400m event to her list of wins after dominating the 800m and 1500m events.
