Contract for synthetic track to be inked this week – Dr. Anthony

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is scheduled to sign off the contract for the synthetic track and construction work is expected to begin at Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara before yearend.

Speaking with Stabroek Sport Sunday last, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, said that the ministry will schedule a media tour of the site later this week when the contract for building of the facility is expected to be signed.

Asked if the construction of the facility is still expected to begin before yearend, Dr. Anthony answered in the affirmative.
In October, the minister had pledged that work at the site will commence before yearend. In another section of the media, Dr. Anthony was reported to have described the synthetic track as the ministry’s “flagship infrastructural project” of 2010.
The track is estimated to cost some $145 million.

Last month in a notice on the government’s procurement website, www.eprocure.gov.gy, the ministry had invited contractors to bid for ‘Phase 1’ of the project that carries a delivery/construction period of six months.

Meanwhile, the 50m Olympic-sized pool which is being constructed at Liliendaal may not be completed before the end of the year as the minister has indicated that the facility still has a “number of small defects.”
