Reece dominates Arokium-sponsored cycle race in Berbice

Berbice’s Neil Reece took top honours in the open and junior categories of the Phillip Arokium Memorial 40-mile cycle road race which ended at New Amsterdam, Berbice on Sunday.

The race meet, which was organised by the Flying Ace cycling club of Berbice and marked the end of the club’s cycling year, began from the Arokium funeral Home, New Amsterdam, proceeded to Adventure Village, Corentyne, then returned to Main and Alexander Street, New Amsterdam for the finish.

Reece won the open event in a time of one hour, 48 minutes and 27 seconds ahead of Traland Ross and Nashane Jaundoo, who finished second and third respectively.

Wazim Hasnoo placed fourth, while Ray Millngton and Keith Griffith were fifth and sixth respectively.

Meanwhile in the junior category, Reece crossed the finish line in front of Jaundoo, who placed second and Millngton third.

Winning the event’s juvenile category was Juban Crawford, who left Elijah Bijadder and Victory Henry trailing in second and third place respectively.

The lone female race, which covered six miles, beginning at #19 Village, Corentyne and finishing at Main and Alexander Streets, New Amsterdam was won by Marcia Dick. Francine Waddle was second.

At the presentation ceremony that followed the race prizes were awarded to the first six finishers in the senior category and the first three juniors, juveniles and females.

Ten sprint prizes were also up for grabs during the race. Reece bagged seven, while Jaundoo, Ross and Hasnoo captured one each.
