Santos, Fruta Conquerors score upset wins

It was a night of upsets when quarterfinal action in the annual Namilco Football Festival Knockout Tournament took place Tuesday night at the Tucville Playfield.

In the opening encounter Santos ended the run of BK International Western Tigers 1-0 while hosts Fruta Conquerors outdid tournament favourites Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 4 – 2 on penalty kicks in the feature match. The two teams are through to the semi-final round.

Santos’ Joel Lloyd scored the game winner in the second half after the two evenly-matched teams battled to a goalless first half.

Following Lloyd’s 69th minute goal Santos was only too happy to defend their slim lead as the Tigers fought tigerishly for the equalizer.

In the second game, Conquerors managed to hold the rampant GDF scoreless until the end of regulation and extra time which sent the match into a penalty shootout.

The tournament continues tonight with Alpha ‘The Hammer’ united engaging New Amsterdam United from 6pm while Victoria Kings will oppose the defending champions Sunburst Camptown from 8pm.
