Sixteen months jail for break-in at friend’s house

“I give you my apology, My Worship. This is my second and last time,” said Joseph Williams before being sentenced to 16 months in jail for breaking and entering the house of his friend and stealing a bottle of Alize and a large bottle of vodka.

Williams, 43, of 172 Laing Avenue Housing Scheme pleaded guilty but offered an explanation to breaking and entering the house of Fayann Morris between January 21-22 at South Ruimveldt Park and stealing one bottle of Alize valued $12,000 and one bottle of vodka valued $4,000.
Yesterday in court, Williams told Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson that he did not want to disturb Morris around five o’clock in the morning so he opened a side window and took the drinks “but I drink out the large vodka.”

Williams went on to tell the magistrate, “I would like to ask if she could please finish off the story. I’ll bring back the Alize and I got the money for the vodka.” He even told the magistrate that it would be “the first and last time” he’d commit such an act.

Morris however countered that it was not the first time Williams had committed the act. She had brought him to court previously and he was placed on a bond, she told the magistrate.

However, she said that after he seemed to have changed his ways she started talking to him again and would even give him food.

Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford asked for custodial sentencing of the defendant and that he should hand over the money he had for the vodka in court.

Williams then paid Morris the $4,000 and was sentenced by the magistrate. As he was being led away he asked Morris, “Fayann that is wha ya do?”
