City Council condemns wanton littering

In a press release the M&CC said persons continue to throw refuse into drainage canals and on parapets. It said that in some sections of the city -outside the Stabroek Market, along King Street, Lacytown between Regent and Charlotte streets and on Wellington Street between Charlotte and Regent streets – this practice has become a major eye sore.

Littering compromises the integrity of the environment and puts the health of citizens at risk as it facilitates the breeding of vectors. The M&CC said officers attached to its solid Waste Management Department work tirelessly to ensure that the city is free from public dumps.

Moreover, the M&CC said two to three tonnes of refuse are removed daily from the Stabroek Market Bus Park and before 24 hours elapse the area is littered again. It said every effort has been made to “bring an end to this undesirable situation” to no avail. Therefore, the City Constabulary Department will arrest persons caught littering and they will be put before the court.
