An FBI officer has sworn in an affidavit that former PNCR parliamentarian Abdul Kadir, indicted over a conspiracy to blow up the JFK airport in 2007, had links to Iranian Moshen Rabbani who was charged in Argentina for masterminding a deadly attack on a Jewish centre.
US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officer, Robert Addonizio made this disclosure in a recent affidavit in a Brooklyn Federal Court in an attempt to convince Judge Dora Irizarry that all evidential material before the court was seized in accordance with the law. The prosecution was forced to make this move after Kadir and his co-accused, Russell Defreitas, a Guyanese with US citizenship who has since claimed to be ‘the brain’ behind the alleged conspiracy, applied to have evidence gathered during the investigation suppressed.
The agent’s affidavit shed light on the local investigation in this case which investigators here had been silent on.
According to Addonizio, in June of 2007 Guyanese lawmen obtained and executed two warrants to search Kadir’s Linden residence and it was during one of the searches that documents establishing a relationship between him and Rabbani were uncovered.
Rabbani-who was a cultural attaché at the Iranian embassy in Argentina in 1994- is being sought for allegedly masterminding the 1994 car-bombing that killed 85 people and injured hundreds more at the Jewish Mutual Association of Argentina (AMIA).
The FBI agent said that Kadir- whose only contact with the US was back in 1996 when he was intransit on his way to and from The Bahamas- is linked to the plot through telephone conversations and surveillance.
The officer argued that the search by the Guyanese lawmen and those in Trinidad, who had examined his luggage after he was arrested in that country on his way to Iran through Venezuela, were all done in accordance with the laws of the two countries.
“Trinidadian law enforcement further advised that it had initially turned over Kadir’s luggage to a third party, but later had obtained and executed a warrant, issued under Trinidadian law, to seize and search the luggage. The luggage contained, among other items, the thumb drive that is referenced in Kadir’s motion to suppress”, the agent deposed.
The FBI agent swore that on or about June 3, 2007 and June 10, 2007 Guyanese law enforcement agents conducted two searches and it was during the first that the documents were found.
He said he was present during the second of the two searches done at the home of Kadir in Linden and it was executed in the presence of his family members and among the items seized were two computer hard drives which were not searched until they were taken to the US.
“Guyanese law enforcement turned over the hard drives and other evidence to JTTF (New York Joint Terrorism Task Force) and FBI agents present in Guyana including myself, and the FBI shipped the evidence to New York. The hard drives were never searched in Guyana. In an abundance of caution, the JTFF sought and obtained a warrant to search the hard drives, issued by United States Magistrate Judge Joan M Azrack of the Eastern District of New York on July 5, 2007”.
He related that the drives were then searched with the assistance of FBI computer forensic experts for documents, video clips, photographs and other relevant files.
As it relates to Defreitas, Addonizio also argued that his home in Guyana was lawfully searched in the presence of one Karen Nero, said to be a close friend of the accused. His New York apartment was also lawfully searched and his statements given to the officers when he was arrested was also done in accordance with the law.
It was during those statements that he reportedly said he was the “brain of everything” and that the plan was “to blow up the tanks” and the intention was to hurt the US economy.
The FBI report had said during the conversation with investigators when he was arrested in New York in June of 2007, Defreitas had initially indicated that others were merely “picking his brain” for ideas when they first approached him about the plot, he later told investigators that in fact it was all his plan.
In relation to Defreitas’ bid to suppress his post-arrest statements, the FBI agent stated that upon his arrest on June 1, 2007, Defreitas was advised of his Miranda Rights by virtue of an Advice of Rights form being loudly read out to him. The agent said that Defreitas never gave any inkling that he was unable to read or understand the form. He also consented to a search of his backpack.
Kadir and Defreitas along with Kareem Ibrahim, an imam from Trinidad and another Guyanese Abdel Nur have been charged with conspiring to blow up JFK airport, tanks storing aviation fuel and underground fuel pipelines in 2007.

jail them if found guilty….why would some one want to blow up jfk airport..where there are thousands of innocent people arriving and leaving from babies to elderly….
no one want to blow up anything don’t be so guilible, do you think a drug addict have time to put any plan like that to fruitian?
Let them rot in Jail if found guilty. For those who are symphatising with them, you should travel the New York subway. Most riders of the subway eye with suspicion anyone who looks out of ordinary.
Good reply Amen-ra…this is what I expected from you!!!
Jail them if found guilty yes
SOME OF THESE GUYS HAD NEVER EVEN SET FOOT IN THE U.S.A.
This trial may cause the US Administration to view the recent visit of our President to Iran and their proposed cooperation on Guyanese soil in a different light since there seems to be evidence of grassroots connections between the Iranians and Guyanese. Feels like dejavu from the Roger Khan trial and look who’s the judge? She may become a specialist of Guyese related court cases.
Dev, if Guyana is in the process of negotiating investment agreements with any country and the US do not have a good relationship with the specific country, then we cannot be intimiated. Bharrat has been visiting Russia. And Cuba has done so much for Guyana recently. What can the US do about that. Nothing! Judge Dora Irizarry is only big in that court room, outside he is just another person facing the elements of life (weather/economy etc). Do you think the US really likes China that’s engaged child labor, pollution etc. NO, but the US army cannot get close to China (the current world power).
devdub,Ü beat mee to it! I wrote my “little Parable” in yesterday’s comment;DACKTA-PRESIDENT seem to be adicted to “THOSE TYPES” This is real frightening…RUSSIAN gat we BAUXITE isuffering our hard working brothers and sisters…Iranians with “MAPPING OF MINERAL WEALTH IS NON SPECIFIC” From de CHAP in de embassy to de EMAM…ole pee-pol rite fu seah “FISH DUZ RATTEN FRUM ‘D’HEAD.
GOD SAVE GUYANA and GOD BLESS AMERICA for doing what Guyana Government FAIL to do.SERVE AND PROTECT THE NATION AND KEEP ITS CHILDREN AT HOME WHERE THEY BELONG
Well said yellowman…America can only bully the weak, they can’t you use their normal heavy handed tactics against the Chinese, it will never work.
A former PNCR member had links to an Iranian embassy personnel, an alledged terrorist, “Rabbani-who was a cultural attaché at the Iranian embassy”. Now the PPPC is linking up with the Iranians. From 1966 to today, both the PNC and the PPP have brought us more grief and sorrow than good, and the majority of Guyanese people still vote either PNC or PPP. How sad?
Iran is identified to be one source of help in our new drive to speed development of our resources. Notice the recent presidential visit? Our leaders do not understand the power politics of this era. They have not learnt from the mistakes of either Preident Burnham or President CB Jagan. They both chose at varying stages of their career to fly in the face of wisdom to anger the power of the day. We are still paying the price for the unchecked even though legitimate emotions of two of our best leaders.
Hogwash, the main reason kadir was arrested is because he was going to iran, when he was arrested he was on his way to venezueala, and at that time the u.s was at odds with venezueala, i had said the same in previous post when he was arrested.
Agreed Amen-ra. They are trying real hard to make something out of these allegations. Stay tuned.
amen ra
See how yu defending dis chap! “He was on his way to Venezuela” Remember RK? He was also on his way to Guyana from Suriname when he got snatch…The drug thing is only an excuse. Shortman knew too much about a plot between a desperate political party and a power hungry country.
Rodrick i’m not defending anyone, i’m just not one of those people to get duped easily because of the u.s so-called war on terror.
Excellent comment amen-ra.
The USA will invent anything to punish countries that do not dance to their tune. Some people here are just too gullible. They will digest anything the ‘news business’ feeds them.
Folks, more cussing out in SN nwsroom this morning; You know why ?. The other Crime rag KN run another bun bai milking story. Oh me gawd ! You should hear the ruckus this morning !.Watch tommorrow another “beat boy” story, mark my words…
AND to top it off, SN trying to make this non story about someone who left Guyana — when ? since the eraly 1990s and to all intents and purposes has stronger British and Trinidadaian connections —into something of a lead story…
Hold on Hold on hold on……..ahhhhhhh ya now i feel better.
phew!
So now he and Jagdeo has something in common. They both have links to Iran.
I don’t buy it.
WOW two computers hard drive was searched when they arrived in the U.S.A, why not in the presence of the person in Guyana, with all this technology available to the lone super power who know what the subversive department in the various intelligence agency could do to those disk, and doctor it to their advantage to get a case to prosecute those guys.
Interesting story.
It’s too bad the evidence (hard drives) had to be taken to the US for examination.
Anyway, if they are guilty, let them feel the full force of the US judicial system……………..
Good reporting SN!
Furthermore, The Iran link to local politics needs to be examined in-depth.
We all know how thorough the FBI are so, SN, stay the course with this case and let’s see if Kadir has any more active, ‘reckless’ local peers.
I wonder who his intellectual authors are?
I know Kadir, we attended Saints together, what happened? as a ex military officer I am hoping that his charges are not true.
