The court heard that between January 22 and 23, Shaneeza Ally, 23, of Number Three Village, West Coast Berbice received two gold chains valued $700,000, four gold rings worth $144,000 and $250,000 totalling $1,094, 000 belonging to Wasim Sheriff. She was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
Meanwhile two juveniles, aged 12 and 13 years old of Number Four Village were charged with larceny from a dwelling house. The court heard that the two girls reportedly stole the articles and gave them to Ally.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Grace Bristol did not object to bail for Ally because she is said to be seven months pregnant. She was placed on $50,000 bail while the girls were released into the custody of their parents.
Attorney-at-law, Joel Persid Edmond told the court that his client was locked up on January 23 and the police forced her to repay the money which she did to avoid being kept in custody. He said the police also asked for $25,000 “to settle the matter.”
The following day, Edmond said the police went to his client’s home and rearrested her for the stolen jewellery and kept her in custody for the night.
Bristol however denied the submissions about “settlement” made by the lawyer and said $228,000 was recovered at the defendant’s house and has been lodged at the station as an exhibit. The matter would be called again on March 2 for report.
