Indian Cultural Centre screens Maqbool today

This afternoon, the Indian Cultural Centre hosts a screening of the much underrated cinematic gem Maqbool.

Maqbool is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and stars Pankaj Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Tabu and Masumeh Makhija. It is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Set in the underworld of Mumbai, the film tells the story of Don Abbaji (Kapoor) who controls Mumbai, but not his almost half his age mistress Nimmi (Tabu).

Through the cooperation of two prophesying policemen played by Nasserudin Shah and Om Puri (and through them, connections to national politicians), Abbaji has never been arrested, and carries on, knowing that money and bribes will assist him throughout his life. Things turn ugly though when his mistress, Nimmi, starts to have an affair with one of his men, Maqbool, who has aspirations of succeeding Abbaji one day.

The film, which will be shown at the Indian Cultural Centre in New Haven Bel Air today from 5.30 pm is open to all members of the public.

Admission is free.
