Indian Cultural Centre screens Teen Kanya

Satyajit Ray’s 1961 film Teen Kanya (Three Daughters) will be screened at the Indian Cultural Centre, 5 New Haven Bel Air, today at 5:30 pm.

The film is set in three episodes. The first episode, ‘The Postmaster’, stars Anil Chatterjee as Nandalal, a young man who comes to be postmaster in a village. He meets a young woman Ratan played by Chandana Banerjee. Nandalal, probably out of boredom teaches Ratan to read and write and a bond develops between them. He then decides to leave the village.

The second episode, ‘Monihara (The Lost Jewels)’ is about  a husband who buys jewels for his wife to gain her love, while she remains cold because she fears that he will take them back.

The third episode ‘Samapati (The Conclusion)’ is one which challenges the caste and class restrictions of the time. Satyajit Ray was one of India’s most renowned directors. His work received several awards, in India and internationally.
The film is in Bengali with English subtitles. Admission is free.
