Doctor charged with verbal abuse of wife

A doctor was yesterday charged with verbally abusing his wife.

Arturo Laxa was sent on his own recognisance by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, after he pleaded not guilty.

The charge states that on January 9, at Georgetown, Laxa made use of abusive language towards Mala Laxa, thus resulting in a breach of the peace.

When given a chance to speak, the doctor said that his wife, who was not in court when the matter was called, was on her way to indicate to the magistrate that she did not want to proceed with the matter.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford had no objection to the accused being admitted to self-bail.

The Magistrate placed the man on self bail and transferred the matter to Court Two for January 14. Sewnarine-Beharry informed Laxa that his wife can indicate to the magistrate at Court Two that she wished to end the matter.
