Two on motorbike injured in Mandela Ave crash

A motorcyclist and his pillion rider were injured after being struck by a car close to the East La Penitence Police Station at Mandela Avenue last night.

Up to press time, the two men were being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital with the motorcyclist said to be in a serious condition. The men were identified as Henry Thornhill and Mahendra Persaud. The incident occurred just after 10 pm.

An eyewitness, who declined to give her name, told this newspaper that the two men were heading north on their motorcycle while the car was heading in the opposite direction. She said that the car had just overtaken a cyclist, but hit the motorcycle.

According to the woman, the two pitched into the air and fell. Both were wearing helmets, she said.

The woman said the driver of the car stopped but did not render any assistance. She said she attempted to stop other vehicles to get the men to the hospital but the vehicles did not stop.

Eventually a passing police van picked them up and rushed them to the hospital. When this newspaper left, the men had been taken for treatment.
