Miner granted bail on damage to property charge

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday placed a miner on $75,000 bail on a charge of malicious damage to property.

It is alleged that on January 17 at Georgetown, Seaton Bamfield, 34, unlawfully and maliciously damaged one glass table, a sofa, one music set, one mirror, and other items valued at $815,000; property of Annette Brummel.

The defendant, of 34 Howes Street, Charlestown pleaded not guilty.

Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson, who represented the defendant, asked that his client be granted reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no previous convictions, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed address, and has been cooperating with the police to date.

When asked, Police Prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar said she has no objections to bail, but asked that it be of a substantial amount.
After hearing all the details, the magistrate placed the defendant on $75,000 bail and the matter was adjourned to February 7 for report and statement.
