City invites bids for Haags Bosch landfill collection

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has begun advertising for the collection and disposal of waste to the landfill at Haags Bosch.

In a press release issued yesterday, the M&CC said that invitation to tender, for the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste for local communities in the city of Georgetown to the new landfill site, has been advertised in the public media.  The closing date for tenders is February 11. Haags Bosch is expected to be opened to receive garbage by the end of this month.

In the meantime, the M&CC says that it has intensified its anti-litter operations in different wards of the city. Over the last month, the M&CC’s environmental health section carried out 20 inspections in the city, including at houses, cottages, tenement rooms, yards and conveniences, common lodging houses and apartments and hairdressers’ premises. It said 77 notices were served to encourage citizens to correct various defects on their premises.

According to the M&CC, it faces “a major challenge” in managing solid waste when persons do not have receptacles on their premises. “The council is calling upon all citizens to make provision for the requisite receptacles for disposal of their waste in an environmentally friendly manner,” the release said.

The council also called on private collectors to desist from dumping garbage “in places not designated for that purpose.”
