Break-in accused says he stole to assist sick daughter

A man appeared on a charge of break and enter and larceny yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and  acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry placed him on $80,000 bail.

It is alleged that between January 29 and  January 30, Troy Lewis broke and entered the shop of Gary Tyrell and stole a quantity of raw gold, colognes and other items amounting to $143,000 in value.

In presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that the virtual complainant secured his shop and left. When he returned on January 30 he found  his shop opened and upon checking the items were missing. He then made a report and the police acting on information received arrested Lewis. Some of the articles reported missing were found in the backdam.

The defendant said that his daughter was sick and he seized the opportunity to steal in an effort to obtain money so he could travel to Charity. However, the man said he did not break into the shop but admitted to stealing some of the items. He said that he was being victimized so that he would have to serve a longer sentence.

The prosecutor objected to bail but  Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted the accused bail in the sum of $80,000 and transferred the matter to Bartica Magistrates’ Court for February 10.
