The two men shot by robbers at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara on Monday night have been admitted to hospital while police have recovered the car taken during the attack.
Hansel Alleyne, 34, of Grove and taxi driver Horace Cupidore, 44, of Kaneville, were up to yesterday afternoon in stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).
In a press release issued yesterday afternoon, police said that they were investigating the robbery, which occurred at about 9.15pm. Alleyne and Cupidore, police reported, were attacked by four men, one of whom was armed with a gun.
Police reported that Alleyne and Cupidore were chatting on the roadway in front of Alleyne’s home when they were held up by the men. The attackers took the two victims into the house and demanded cash and jewellery.
It was while in the house, police said, that Alleyne was shot to the neck and left thigh while his friend Cupidore was shot in the left thigh. The perpetrators, according to police, then took away an undisclosed sum of cash and jewellery. The attackers subsequently escaped in Cupidore’s vehicle, which was left parked on the bridge in front of Alleyne’s house.
The car, police said, was later found abandoned in Grove.
When Stabroek News visited the area yesterday, Alleyne’s house was locked.
Residents told this newspaper that the man lived there alone.
A resident, who requested anonymity, told this newspaper that he was sitting on his verandah when he heard the gunshots. “I hear about four gunshots and I didn’t really know is what happening.
I could tell that it was coming from somewhere close but I couldn’t tell exactly where,” the man said.
After he heard the shots the man said he went back into his house for a short time and could not tell whether a car drove by.
However, he said he later learnt that the gunmen headed north along the public road as they escaped from the robbery scene.
Alleyne and Cupidore, according to him, have been friends for some time and it was not unusual to see the men standing in front the house speaking with each other.
