Victoria man killed in car accident

A man died yesterday morning after a car slammed into him as he was walking along the Plaisance Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

The car also struck seven-year-old Michelle Joseph, who is now hospitalized.

Dead is Andrew Hanover Glasgow, 45, of Middle Walk, Victoria, East Coast Demerara. He was a father of two.  Relatives said he had been on his way to work at the time of the accident

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred at about 7:40 am.

A mint green-colored 212 car, PMM 3202, was about to overtake another on the inside when the driver of that car shifted gear and he took evasive action and hit Glasgow who was walking down the road. “I hear the bam and when I look over I see the child flipping over the vehicle and she landed near to the drain,” the eyewitness said. The eyewitness said another child was also with her but she was not hit.

A man and woman who were in the car at the time exited and took out “something in a white salt bag and disappear.” He said that the driver of the car was nowhere to be found. Stabroek News was told that the driver was on his cellular phone at the time the accident occurred.

Alicia Joseph, Michelle’s mother, said her daughter was on her way to the St Paul’s Primary School when she was hit.

She said the mother of the other child called her and “I didn’t even go to the scene to see what happen, I just come straight to the hospital to see my child.”

When the woman spoke with this newspaper, she said the other child was unhurt but she “home trembling.” The anxious mother said her daughter has a deep gash to her forehead and she was unconscious when she arrived at the hospital. She added that the girl regained consciousness and “asking for me.”

The woman said her daughter and her friend have gone to school together every morning from the time she started primary school. Joseph said because it was raining, she had suggested to her daughter that she stay at home but she insisted that she go to school.

“She said to me ‘Mommy I can’t skip school because when I ain do good you does vex.’ But is best I did keep her home,” the woman said.
