Would-be robber shot after attacking cops with cutlass

A Wortmanville man was shot early yesterday morning, moments after he attacked a policeman and tried to rob him.

Police yesterday identified the injured man as Kwame Bruce, 32, of Lot 26 Norton Street, Wortmanville. Bruce, who was shot in the thigh, is currently in police custody, after receiving treatment at the Georgetown Hospital.
Police said in a press release yesterday that they were investigating the incident, which occurred around 0000 hours at Hadfield and Smyth Streets, Georgetown.

Investigations revealed that Detective Lance Corporal Desmond Chin was walking along Cornhill Street, when he was attacked by Bruce “with a cutlass.” Police said Bruce attempted to rob him. Chin, police said, ran to the Mobile Police Outpost at the Stabroek Market and sought the assistance of ranks stationed there. During subsequent efforts to arrest him, Bruce attacked the ranks with the cutlass, causing them to resort to the use of force. He was shot to his left thigh.
