THAG looking to Boa Vista link

The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) is looking to forge a link with the Boa Vista Visitors Bureau so as to tap into the 200 tourists who transit through the border states of Brazil daily.

THAG was part of the delegation of local private sector representatives who travelled to Boa Vista in the State of Roraima for a series of meetings with officials there.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, President of the Association Paul Stephenson said that during the trip a meeting was held with representatives of the Boa Vista Visitors Bureau. He said it is clear that there is a tourist market that Guyana can benefit from; since about 200 tourists traverse this area daily. He said that Guyana offers a tourism package which could help in the re-directing of traffic. Stephenson identified Lethem, the Rupununi and Georgetown as the areas where the tourists may want to visit.

THAG is now in the process of arranging the details. He said tourists can be transported in luxury coaches to Lethem then flown to the city. Lamenting the absence of Meta Airlines, which flew directly between Ogle and Brazil, Stephenson said that THAG will engage the Aircraft Owners Association of Guyana   to address the issue of flights.  Additionally, THAG will be meeting with the Minister of Tourism Manniram Prashad. According to him, THAG will request that a small waiting room be constructed at the Ogle airstrip.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) Ramesh Dookhoo said that three hotels are currently being constructed in Lethem.  He said that he hopes to see these hotels completed in six months so they could coincide with THAG’s plans for the tourism sector.
