Man stole hard drive to buy porridge for his daughter – court told

A man yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a simple larceny charge.

It is alleged that on February 17, Selwyn Alleyne of 97 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, stole one external hard drive, property of Sedel Thomas.

Pleading his case, Alleyne told the court that the virtual complainant owed him money and the only reason he committed this offence was because he needed money to supply his daughter with porridge. The man said he did not sell the article, instead, he pawned it.

Presenting the facts of the case, Prosecutor Vinetta Pindar, told the court that the defendant went to Pressy’s Enterprise and removed the hard drive. With surveillance cameras in place, Alleyne was identified and upon his return to the business location the following day, he was arrested. The article was retrieved from the pawn shop.

The matter was adjourned to March 25 and Alleyne was granted bail in the sum of $25,000.
