Murder accused escapes from Camp St jail

Prison Chief Dale Erskine says an investigation is underway to determine how a murder accused prisoner escaped from the Georgetown Prison on Camp Street on Monday.

Speaking to Stabroek News   briefly today Erskine said Eddie Williams’ escape was still being probed and they were still to ascertain how he departed the prison.

Williams, of 37 Back Street, Ruimzigt, WCD, was on remand for the alleged murder of Jermaine Jones on November 30 last year.

Williams was not required to plead to the capital offence on February 9th, 2011 and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin. It was reported that Jones, 29, of Diamond Housing Scheme was stabbed to death at Ruimzigt during an early morning row. The police had said he sustained 14 stab wounds and died before reaching the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was rushed shortly after the incident.

The escape came just days before the anniversary of the infamous break-out of five prisoners from the Camp Street jail on February 23,  2002. That breakout led to a crime spree unprecedented in the country’s history.

Even though the murder accused is reported to have escaped since Monday there has yet been no bulletin issued by the police for him.

Since 2002 there have been numerous breaches of security at prisons.
