Albouystown house collapses, woman homeless

An Albouystown house collapsed on Tuesday, leaving a woman homeless.

Savitri Ramdeen, 61, called “Savo,” looked on as her home at 21 Hill Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, crumbled to the ground just around 11:00am.

When Stabroek News visited the location, where the frame of the old, wooden structure still stands, the damaged house hung to the side, surrounded by broken boards.

A look inside the structure revealed furniture, clothing and a few household items in disarray.

Kim (only name given), one of Ramdeen’s neighbours, related that the woman, who lived alone, was able to retrieve some of her clothing and then left to spend the night at one of her employers.

The woman, who works as a domestic, was seeking employment, Kim said, since she has the burden of starting life anew. The neighbour said Ramdeen appeared to have no family and had so far received no help.

However, this newspaper was later informed that Food for the Poor had visited and left a telephone number for Ramdeen to make contact with the organisation. Concerned neighbours explained that Ramdeen would be thankful for any form of assistance offered.
