Man jailed for six months after hitting ex

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Thursday sentenced a man to six months imprisonment, after he admitted to assaulting his ex-girlfriend because she refused to rekindle a relationship with him.

John Isaacs, 30, of 141 Bombay Terrace, Prashad Nagar, pleaded guilty to the assault of Tenisha Chance. He committed the offence on January 22, at the Jubilee Resort. Isaacs was also charged with using threatening language to the woman on the same day but he denied the charge.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the said day, the couple were at the Jubilee Resort when Isaacs ordered Chance to get into his car. Telford said the woman refused and Isaacs then threatened to shoot her if she did not comply.

The couple subsequently headed for Prashad Nagar. On their journey, Telford said, Isaacs asked Chance to rekindle their relationship, which she had severed. The woman refused and at this point Isaacs reached for a Guinness bottle, which Telford said he used to hit Chance about her face and body. Telford said the man again threatened to shoot and kill Chance, telling her that if he didn’t do it, he would get his friends to do it, after which he would escape.

Telford said that Chance managed to talk Isaacs out of his plan, after which she told him that she was going to the hospital for treatment. She used the opportunity to escape. Chance, who has a child with Isaacs, obtained a medical certificate and she later reported the matter to the police. The prosecutor also told the court that it was not the first time that Isaacs had hit the woman.

When the Magistrate asked Chance if the accused had hit her previously, she responded: “Yes, My worship.”

When given a chance to respond, Isaacs told the court that at no time did he hit the woman with a bottle. He said he hit her with his hand. He told the court that Chance had invited him to the resort and when he got there, he saw her sitting on a young man’s lap, which annoyed him. He said he called her and asked her to accompany him to his Prashad Nagar home.

Isaacs told the court that while they were travelling to Georgetown, they had an “exchange of words.”

He said that Chance had been rude to him while he was speaking to her and was unwilling to rekindle their relationship. He said too that she pulled the steering wheel, which caused the car to sway and he hit her in the face with his hand in the region of her right eye.

After handing down the sentence for assault charge, the Magistrate remanded Isaacs on the threatening language charge. He was ordered to return to court on April 7.
