Miner killed at Five Star was stabbed while asleep

Miner Richard Melvin Titus, who was murdered at Five Star Backdam, North West District (NWD) last week, was attacked while asleep and the perpetrator is still on the run.

The reputed wife of       the deceased, Camille Thompson, told Stabroek News yesterday that investigators have since told her that Titus, called ‘Cookie’ and ‘One Knottie’, had argued with the suspect several hours before the incident.

Titus, 30, was sleeping in front a shop when the suspect returned armed and stabbed him to the side of his body; just under the armpit. Thompson said police told her that after the man stabbed her reputed husband he went back to the mining camp where they worked, picked up his bag and fled the area.

“I still don’t understand how this man get to flee the area,” the woman said. “People had to know what he do to my husband and I’m sure they coulda stop he.”

The woman further said that a post-mortem examination was conducted on Titus’ body yesterday. He died from shock and haemorrhaging from the stab wound.

“The police told us that they are searching for this man but they are not really sure where he get away to… I don’t even know what to think right now. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope they find this man,” Thompson said.

Titus was discovered wounded at Five Star backdam, NWD and public-spirited citizens made immediate efforts to get him medical attention but he died before his arrival at the Port Kaituma Hospital.
