Ex-employee of Lands and Surveys accused of corruption

A former Guyana Lands and Surveys employee accused of  larceny by public officer and obtaining money by false pretence was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $200,000 after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Robert Parks of 136 D’Urban Street is that between October 11 and November 1, 2010 at Georgetown, being employed by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, he stole one plan valued $3.3M received by him by virtue of his employment.

On September 30, 2010, with intent to defraud, Parks is alleged to have obtained from Babulall $79,000 by pretending that he was working with the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission and was in a position to acquire a plan for a plot of land, knowing same to be false.

The accused was not required to plead to the two charges when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being granted his pre-trial liberty. Parks was admitted to bail in the sum of $100,000 for each charge.

The matter will be called again on May 24.
