Sophia garbage explosion caused by spray can

Subrina Abiola Johnson, the woman who was severely burnt Friday last while burning garbage, said the incident was caused when a can of ‘dog spray’ fell into the lit pile.

From her hospital bed yesterday, Johnson recalled the explosion, which occurred as she was going about her usual evening chore of burning garbage.

She said that she was in her yard burning the garbage when the ‘dog spray’ fell into the pile.

Johnson’s mother, who was present at her daughter’s bedside, related that the spray can was on a fence close to where the garbage was being burned. Somehow, she said, it fell into the heap and went unnoticed.

Johnson said that as she was trying to pick up an empty bottle, which she saw rolling away from the pile, the can exploded.

The impact of the blast, she said, sent her flying across the road. Her car was parked across the street and blocked her from being pitched into the trench. Her mother said it could have caused her daughter to contract pneumonia.

As a result of the accident, Johnson sustained burns to her face, neck, chest, hands and legs. However, she said she is hopeful to be strong enough to be discharged by the end of the week, since she is determined to fight through the injuries.
