National Trust observing World Heritage Day

The National Trust of Guyana has prepared a programme to celebrate International Day for Monuments and Sites which will be observed on Monday.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, under whose auspices the agency falls, this year’s observances will be held under the theme ‘The Cultural Heritage of Water.’

This day of observance, also known as World Heritage Day, was created on April 18, 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and was later approved at the 22nd General Conference by the United Nations Educational, Scienti-fic and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

International Day for Monuments and Sites provides an opportunity to raise awareness among the population about the world’s diverse heritage and the efforts needed to protect and conserve it.

This year’s programme includes a Heritage Conscious Walk from the National Museum’s Lily Pond to the Seawall Bandstand during which specific sites will be identified as the procession moves along Main Street through Kingston concluding at the sea wall location.

The walk starts at 10am. In addition, exhibitions, games and three organized tours from the National Trust to the Maritime Administration Department – Ports and Harbours Division, the Stabroek Market Tower, the Light House and Round House/Seawall Area/ Bandstand have been planned to commemorate this day at 10am, 1pm and 2.30pm respectively.

The Trust invites all ministries and related agencies to participate in the activities.
