Shifted repair band caused sewage spill

The sewage spill which occurred on Monday afternoon at the corners of Smyth and Princess streets was due to a shifted repair band and not a burst sewerage line, GWI’s Sanitation Manager Rensord Joseph says.

A front page photo of the sewerage line spewing filth was carried in yesterday’s edition of the newspaper.  One motorist who frequents the area told this newspaper that there was a similar occurrence last week and that a team from GWI went to fix the problem.

In a release, Joseph said that “pressure was placed in the repair band due to an aging wooden structure which supports the sewerage line”. He said that as an interim corrective measure to contain the spill, the pump was turned off. “However as a long-term measure, plans are in place to repair the wooden structure by this evening, Tuesday April 19, 2011 [yesterday],” Joseph was quoted as saying in the release.  He said that “this and other sewerage facilities will benefit from the completion of the Georgetown Sanitation Improve-ment Programme.”
