Taxi driver granted bail over Essequibo road death

A taxi-driver accused of causing the death of a greens vendor last Friday by driving in a dangerous manner was granted bail when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Oswald Boston, 47, of 153 Crane Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara was not required to plead to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin. It is alleged that on April 15 at the Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo, public road, Boston drove motor car HB 7753 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Steve Rogers.

Rogers, called ‘Blackie’ and ‘Kiwi,’ of Lot 105 Side Line Dam, Beterver-wagting succumbed almost instantly to head injuries he sustained in the crash, Stabroek News was told. An unidentified child was also injured after the car crashed into a bridge at Orangestein around 9.30 am last Friday.

Police had said that Rogers and the child were passengers in motor car HB 7763 which was proceeding along the Orangestein Public Road. It is alleged that another vehicle swerved across their path, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and collide with a bridge, the police had said. Rogers and the child were taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where Rogers was pronounced dead on arrival while the child was treated and referred to the Georgetown Hospital. Rogers was a father of four.

The driver of the car alleged to have caused the accident was taken into custody and charged on Monday. The court was told that Boston is single and has two children.

He was granted bail and ordered to report to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station once weekly. The matter was adjourned to June 6 at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
