Owner charged after dogs attack, bite student

A member of the Reliance Community Policing Group was yesterday charged with the attack by a pack of dogs on a 14-year-old student at Adelphi, East Canje Berbice.

Nazmoon Higgins, of Adelphi, East Canje Berbice pleaded not guilty to a charge of setting rabid dogs at large, when she appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Magistrate’s court. It was alleged that Higgins, being the owner of vicious dogs, allowed them to bite Yougnauth Gokhul on April 14.

Police Prosecutor Orin Joseph told the court that Higgins, the owner of seven vicious dogs, left her gate open on the day of incident. Gokhul, also of Adelphi, while returning home from a shop in the neighbourhood at the time, was passing Higgins’ yard when the pack of dogs ran out and attacked him. He was subsequently pinned to the ground by the animals, which bit him about the body.

Gokhul was later taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital for treatment. After a report to the Reliance Station, Higgins was arrested and charged. She is to return to court on July 6.
