Duo found guilty of ganja trafficking

-escapee sentenced in absentia

Two of three persons were each sentenced to three years imprisonment on Tuesday by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton who found them guilty of trafficking 102 grammes of cannabis.

Tyson Carmichael and Quacy Rollins were sentenced and ordered to pay a $30,000 fine each, at the end of their trial. Carmichael, who absconded during the trial and remains on the run, was sentenced and fined in absentia. Rollins and Haquiena Joseph, the third defendant, were, however, both present at sentencing.

The charge against the trio is that on March 28, 2007 at Georgetown, they had in their possession 102 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The Magistrate said that based on the evidence presented to the court against the men, they were found guilty. She said, however, that Joseph was found not guilty of the offence.

The defendants had always maintained their innocence. They were granted bail by the High Court and Carmichael subsequently escaped.
