No.60 man shot in hip after bandits raid home

A 47-year-old resident of No. 60 Village, Corentyne sustained gunshot injuries to his hip after three bandits invaded his home around 8:45 pm on Monday; they escaped with a quantity of gold jewellery.

Beshram Persaud who owns a fishing vessel was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital. He was then transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted a patient in a stable condition.

Reports are that the bandits, armed with handguns barged into the house through an open door while Persaud and his wife, Vidya Persaud and their two children were preparing to go and pray.

Police said in a release that the bandits confronted Persaud and shot and injured him in the process. The men then held up Vidya Persaud who was in the kitchen and took away a quantity of jewellery and escaped, the release said.

It said too that “a magazine containing fourteen live 9mm rounds and a spent shell was recovered at the scene by the police.”

A neighbour, Sunil Sawh said he and his wife were watching a movie when he heard his dogs barking fiercely. He went out on his veranda to investigate and other residents were “shouting that uncle Ram get shot.”

After he realized that bandits were in the area he wanted to run out with his cutlass but his wife prevented him. When he eventually got to the house Persaud had already been taken to the hospital.

Their 15-year-old daughter who was brushing her teeth said “all I heard was boom” and persons started to scream.”
Sawh said the police arrived promptly at the scene and conducted investigations and also searched the area in vain for the bandits.

He described Persaud, who is the president of the mandir at CWC, as a “very humble and hardworking man.”
