Guyana features on ‘50 tours of a lifetime’ list

Guyana has been featured as one of the National Geographic Traveler Magazine’s “50 tours of a lifetime,” which is being seen as a major international boost for the country’s prospects as a tourist destination.

It has been listed as one of the best tours in Central and South America in the magazine’s April edition, a press release from the Tourism Ministry said. The magazine also published a 16-day itinerary offered by Wilderness Explorers, focusing on places like Surama, Rewa, Nappi and Yupukari. The Surama Village Eco-Lodge in the North Rupununi was named on the ‘Stay List’ of Best Hotels in South America.

Minister of Tourism Manniram Prashad was quoted as saying that the feature on Guyana is an indication of the growing tourism industry. He said exposures such as this will help to raise the destination profile and create more awareness of the country.

Prashad said to date Guyana has been featured in regional and international publications such as Caribbean Beat, Perceptive Travel Online Magazine and has been featured in the UK Stylist Magazine in a piece titled “Kaieteur-Guyana is the New Amazon.” The Travel Channel also aired an episode on Guyana called “The Wild Within-Guyana” as part of its TV series in March/April.
