Two suspects shot by police in Sophia

Police shot two men last night in Sophia in separate incidents: one was allegedly ransacking a house and the other allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman.

Up to press time last night, Randy Charles, 26, of Turkeyen and Carl Shaw were being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital for gunshot wounds to the leg. The men’s condition was stable and they were expected to be admitted, hospital sources said. Charles was expected to undergo surgery to remove the bullet from his upper thigh but according to a relative, it was not clear whether a doctor would be available.

Charles’ brother, Nicholas told Stabroek News that the details on his brother’s shooting were sketchy. “The police ain’t tell we nothing and they ain allowing we to talk to he”, he said as he waited anxiously outside the hospital. However, he said, according to initial accounts, Charles was allegedly ransacking a house and police were notified. He said that police claimed that his brother had a gun and shot him. The incident occurred close to 9 pm at Cummings Park, ‘E’ Field, Sophia. Nicholas said that a girl had owed his brother money and he may have gone to the home to get it back.

He said that after the shooting, police took Charles back to the Turkeyen Police Station and did not take him to the hospital for a while but kept him in the back of a van. The police refused to tell the family anything, he said.

Meanwhile, details on Shaw’s shooting were also sketchy. No relative was present at the hospital. However, Stabroek News was told that the incident also occurred at Sophia. Reports said that Shaw allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman but police were notified and caught up with him and he was shot in the leg.
Police vehicles transported both men to the hospital. Investigations are ongoing.
