Police vehicle crashes into Pere St house

The driver of a Guyana Police Force (GPF) vehicle yesterday morning lost control of it and careened into a yard at the corner of Pere Street and Kitty Public Road, crashing into a wall of a house.

While the driver of the police vehicle, PKK 161, reportedly claimed that he swerved to avoid hitting a dog, residents in the area said that the man was speeding.

The damage caused by the out-of-control police vehicle

The accident happened just a few metres from the dangerous turn by the Russian Embassy but  the driver had already cleared the turn when it occurred.

According to an eyewitness the white police van was at the time escorting a police officer when the driver lost control.

As the vehicle approached Pere Street the driver somehow lost control and the vehicle went over a small drain into Pere Street before ripping out the gate at Lot 50 Pere Street and then ramming into a downstairs wall of the two-story building.

The vehicle hit the wall severely damaging the concrete structure and it was only kept out of the house by the grilled windows. The bottom of the wall crumbled while one of the posts on which one half of the gate was attached was also shifted.

The police vehicle and the house it ran into.

“When this thing happen all four dem come out of the vehicle and holding dem head and it was like dem stupid… And he [the diver] start saying how he swerve from a dog but dem aint had no dog on the road,” the young man who witnessed the accident said.

He said the officer who was being escorted stopped and spoke briefly with the ranks, who were all in uniform, before leaving the scene.

When Stabroek News arrived on the scene the vehicle, which had minor damage to most of the left side, had  already been removed from the yard and was on the roadway.

Stabroek News understands that the owners of the building are overseas and it is looked after by a caretaker who has already visited the scene and assessed the damage.
