Angoy’s Ave boy drowns at Lochaber

A 12-year-old boy drowned on Saturday after he plunged from a koker into a trench at Lochaber, West Canje, breaking his neck in the process.

Dead is Stephan Andrew Wilson of Cow Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam.  The youth had observed his 12th birthday on Thursday and his mother, Abiola Wilson was preparing a party for him later on Saturday when the boy, his brother, Lennox Greaves and two cousins went out at around 2pm.

They went to swim at the Lochaber canal. A resident said that at around 4pm, Stephan plunged from the koker into the trench.

He did not re-surface and the other boys searched frantically assisted by two other residents.  Eventually they found him in the water but he was already dead and his neck appeared to be broken.

Wilson said she got the news after 5pm. She recalled that she was busy preparing for the party when she was told of the incident.

The woman said that prior to them leaving the home, she heard them saying that they were going for a swim. Wilson said that she warned them not to but she was busy with her preparations and did not know when they left.  Stephan was a student of the St Aloysius Primary school and recently wrote the National Grade Six exam.

Wilson said that he was doing well with his classes and was hoping to attend the Berbice Educational Institute or the New Amsterdam Multilateral.

He is survived by his parents, four sisters, three brothers and other relatives.
