Goat owner charged with shooting at farmers

Compton Green was on Monday charged with shooting at two farmers who tried to take his goats to the pound, after they found the animals in their watermelon patch.

Green, of Lot 24 Liverpool Village, Corentyne, was refused bail and remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Whim Court.

He pleaded not guilty to a charge of discharging a loaded firearm.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court that on April 30, Leroy Bennette and Herme Parks found a flock of Green’s goats at their watermelon farm, aback Alness Village. The animals had destroyed their plants, Dayaram said.

As a result, the men gathered the goats and were attempting to take them to the pound at Whim Police Station, Dayaram charged, when Green approached and demanded that the animals be handed over to him. The complainants reportedly refused to comply and during the ensuing argument Green is alleged to have pulled a gun and fired two shots at the men. He then took his animals.

A hearing is fixed for May 25.
