Wharf body identified as missing State Planning employee

Less than a day after he was reported missing, the body of a 51-year-old man was discovered under a wharf at Kingston, Georgetown on Saturday morning.

Mohamed Fazal Shaw, of Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, was last seen alive sitting on a bench on Main Street.

A relative told Stabroek News last night that they are waiting on the results of a post-mortem examination before saying anything further.

The post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted today.

Shaw, according to the relative, was a Chief Planner at the State Planning Secretariat.
The man, she said, had no health complaints and had only done a full check-up at the doctor about two weeks ago.

When Shaw did not return home on Friday night relatives became worried and reported him missing the following morning.

Several hours after the report was made, a guard, who works in the Kingston area, discovered Shaw’s body in the water under the wharf. The guard, according to the relative, raised an alarm and persons subsequently called police.

The body was taken to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour on Saturday but by the time relatives were informed it was too late to identify Shaw.

The niece of the deceased returned to the parlour early yesterday morning to identify the body.

“He had no reason to be in the Kingston area…I don’t know how he got there. He didn’t have any problems with anyone. He was a good, peaceful man,” the relative said.
