Driver charged in death of call centre worker

Lakeram Prashad, the driver who allegedly caused the death of call centre worker Rozena Razack, was released on $780,000 bail after he was charged yesterday.

Prashad, 36, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence (DUI), when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave– Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that on July 21, at High Street, Georgetown, Prashad, of the Annandale Squatting Area, drove motor car PDD 7478 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Rozena Razack. It was also alleged that on the same day, he drove the said motor car when his blood alcohol limit was 105 micro-grammes, rendering him incapable.

Attorney Vic Puran, who appeared for Prashad, requested bail on the grounds that his client posed no risk of flight. He noted that Prashad was placed on $50,000 station bail and appeared in court yesterday. He also asked the court to take into consideration that the defendant has a child who is a minor.

Prosecutor Venetta Pindar had no objection to the man being granted bail, but requested that he report to the Brickdam Police Station on Mondays and Fridays at 9am. She further asked that the accused lodge his passport at the station.

In granting bail, the Magistrate took into consideration the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the court needed to send a strong message.

Prashad, a labourer, was placed on $750,000 bail for the causing death charge and $30,000 for the DUI charge. The matter will be called again on September 16, at Court One.

Razack, an employee of the Clear Connect Call Centre, was knocked down when the driver of the swerved into her path. She was among a large group of employees of the call centre, and was walking ahead with two others, who managed to swiftly move out of harm’s way while she was hurled over the top of the vehicle.

The Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, resident was in an unconscious state until the time of her death. She succumbed to her injuries at the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital on Wednesday morning at around 2:30 am.
