Bartica market stallholders fume over power, water woes

Stallholders are angry over the continued operation of the Bartica Market without either a power or water supply.

Stallholders say they are now the victims of vandalism as a result of lack of electricity. This newspaper was told that a small number of persons have access to power in their stalls, but the remainder are without.
Also, as a result of the situation stallholders are being forced to fetch water from the river to the washroom when necessary.

One man indicated that the vendors do not intend to do anything about the situation but are furious because they were given no warning. “They [the Neighbourhood Democratic Council] did not even go on television and announce that well they have a financial situation or anything like that,” the man stated.

Persons are also dissatisfied with the government, who they say is not looking into the matter and offering any sort of assistance.

Bartica Council Chairman Gerald Joseph said there was not much that could be done about the situation, which was due to a lack of finances.
