USAID, through its Governance Enhancement Project is awarding a grant to the Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB) at a ceremony set for the Cara Lodge today.
According to a press release from the US Embassy, the purpose of the grant is to support EAB activities for the 2011 General and Regional Elections, with an emphasis on Election Day activities at polling stations countrywide. “It is anticipated that greater citizens’ involvement in electoral processes will contribute to free, fair and transparent elections, engender national trust in the elections and contribute to the non-violent resolution of any disputes,” the release.
Through USAID funding, the EAB will recruit, train and place local observers at polling and tally stations; establish a real-time regional communication system for local observers; provide election-related information to the public and serve as an interlocutor for stakeholder engagements between and among political parties, donors, other election observer groups and the public.
The release noted that the EAB is a local, citizen-based, non-partisan, non-profit NGO founded in June 1991 to assist in the establishment, maintenance and preservation of democracy, particularly with regards to the election process.
