Strathspey businessman shoots suspected robber

A man is now a patient under guard at the Georgetown Hospital after he was reportedly shot during an attempt to break into the home and business of a Strathspey, East Coast Demerara businessman on Sunday.

Businessman Surendra Persaud fired at the three men attempting to break into his property at about 11:45 pm.

According to a police press release, Persaud was alerted by the sound of breaking glass from his business, Surendra and Sons Auto Store and Home Furnishing, situated on the lower flat of his home. Armed with his licensed firearm, he confronted the men, who were in the act of breaking into the premises. As a result, he discharged rounds at them.

The men managed to escape but left a trail of blood behind, leading police in their direction. Subsequent investigations by the police led to the apprehension of the suspect now in hospital, who had a gunshot wound to the abdomen. A steel cutter was recovered at the scene by the police.

When Stabroek News contacted Persaud, he declined to comment.
