Robbery convict escapes, recaptured

A robbery convict’s bid for freedom was short lived yesterday when prison officers managed to recapture him minutes after he escaped.

Zelon Johnson, of Lot 50 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, who is serving an 18-month sentence for robbery was working in the prison’s agriculture plot when, just after 15:00 hrs, he escaped.

Sirens blared soon after he was missed and prison officers assisted by the police began to search for Johnson.
Minutes later, he was recaptured at his family home, just over a mile from the prison. He was still dressed in his prison garb.

Persons who rushed out on hearing the siren told this newspaper that the immediate area was swarming with prison officers and police who were searching for the man before they widened the net and recaptured him at Stanleytown.
