Women killed in crash near Bartica identified

Two women are dead and five persons are hospitalised after an early morning accident yesterday involving a truck that had just left Bartica for the mining fields in Region Seven.

Police today said that at about 0730h. yesterday, motor lorry GMM 9254 which was being driven by Leon D’Abreu, 33 years of Third Avenue, Bartica, and transporting fuel and goods with eight passengers in the tray, began rolling back down a hill which the driver was ascending at the time along the Barama Road in the Itaballi Area.
 
The driver lost control of the vehicle which toppled and resulted in the death of Loretta Lewis, 20 years of Scotsburg, Corentyne, and Dorette Donald, 33 years of No. 78 Village, Corentyne.
 
The driver and the other passengers received injuries and are receiving medical attention at the Bartica Hospital.
 
Investigations are in progress. A resident of Bartica told this newspaper that the accident occurred at about 8 am, at a point just before the Itaballi Landing.

The accident is said to have occurred as the truck was going up a steep hill. One of the women died on the spot, while the other died on the way to the hospital. The driver of the vehicle is from Bartica.

According to the resident, the truck was laden with fuel and other goods for the back dam.
This is just the latest fatality on the interior roads. Just last month, three persons died and several others were injured after the truck they were in overturned while the driver was negotiating a turn at Bottom Arawak, Arimu in Region Seven.

The truck was also travelling to the back dam and was also laden with fuel and other goods.
