National Competitiveness Summit set for tomorrow

President Bharrat Jagdeo will deliver the feature address at the National Competitiveness Summit planned for tomorrow at the Guyana Inter-national Conference Centre.

Jagdeo is the Chairman of the National Competitiveness Council (NCC). A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said the summit is a collaborative effort of the NCC and the private sector that will feature an opening session followed by presentations on ‘Development of Human Resources in a Globally Competitive Environment’ and ‘The Competitiveness Challenge for Developing States’. It is being held under the theme ‘Partnering to Promote Economic Growth and Development’ to address major global and domestic developments that will impact Guyana’s competitiveness on the world stage.

After the opening a ‘break-out session’ is planned to discuss strategic areas of development such as Trade Strategy and Export Promotion Zones, Manufac-turing, Small Business Development, Tourism and other Services, Agro Pro-cessing, Forestry, Infrastruc-ture, Alternative Energy and Technology. A member of the private sector will be the lead facilitator of each group and will be tasked with making a formal presentation summarizing the discussions in each group.

GINA said the first private sector summit was held under the theme ‘Turning Words into Action’. It was the first such session to be hosted locally. The NCC is Guyana’s highest level public-private advisory council and provides strategic advice to the government on economic development and competitiveness.

It was established after the launch of the National Competitiveness Strategy in May 2006 at the Presidential Summit on Private Sector Development, following extensive collaboration between the government and private sector.
